Here's a fun way to create some eye-catching graphics you could find a use for in your website or blog, website template or maybe a graphic project you're working on.
Wordle is a java applet that will generate images of word clouds out of text that you supply. You can either paste text into the applet text box or you can submit a link for the tool to grab text from any blog or blog feed that has a feed from RSS or Atom.
The generated image can be saved to their online gallery if you feel like showing off your word cloud prowess, but more importantly, you can also use the copy you generate freely for your own purposes. And some of the layouts you generate with your text are very eye-catching. The applet has font and color editing capabilities as well.
Extra things needed that make it easier on you to get a good copy of the image into your favorite graphics editor:
While not necessary, having the option to print to PDF allows you to save your generated graphic in a format that allows for lossless resizing and a transparent background.
Using the applet is simple. Click the Create link, and supply your text either by pasting a bunch into the text box or providing a link to the text you would like to use. Click Go and bam! you now have a free content image. Edit the layout, font and color. When you're happy with your editing, click the Open in Window button.
If you have a PDF print option, use it now. Otherwise, you'll need to take a screenshot of the graphic so you can open it in your favorite graphics editor. To create a PDF using CutePDFWriter, just click the print button and select CutePDFWriter as the printer in your dropdown list and click OK to print. Choose a location for the PDF file to be saved. That's it.
